The local fabric
The village sits on a rock bar: the ground is narrow, the buildings are tight, and a house leans on its neighbour as much as on the rock. This is Annot sandstone country, the same formation as the Grand Coyer, and that sandstone builds the walls — roughly squared rubble, lime and sand mortar, dressed stone kept for corners and surrounds.
As everywhere here, retaining is part of the structure and not decoration: terraces, access ramps and the feet of façades all hold each other. When a terrace wall moves, the wall alone is rarely the cause.
