Stone mason in Castellane (04120)
Castellane is forty minutes away, over the Toutes Aures pass. The stone changes here: it is limestone. And a good part of the old centre lies within monument surrounds, which means nothing there is done at random.

The local fabric
The old fabric is limestone rubble, roughly squared, laid in fairly regular courses. The local peculiarity is the binder: alongside lime you find gypsum and sand mortars, the gypsum having been quarried on site for centuries. That plaster is what gives the old façades their pink cast — and it is why we always open a joint before deciding what goes back into it.
Original roofs are canal tile, often with no overhang, the tiles bedded straight onto the wall head; where there is an overhang it is a génoise. The better houses in the centre sometimes carry a hollow cornice modelled in plaster on a reed armature. The fabric inside the old walls is dense and tall — four to six storeys — with a great many dressed stone surrounds.
What we do there
- Repointing and façade repair in a compatible mortar — lime or plaster, as the wall requires.
- Restoration of old-centre houses within monument surrounds.
- Retaining walls and terraces in local stone.
- Structural masonry, earthworks and underpinning.
