The local fabric
The houses are built of small unsquared limestone rubble bedded in lime and sand mortar, with Var river cobbles as filler, quoins of larger squared rubble and dressed stone surrounds. All of it was meant to be rendered, then finished in smoothed gypsum mortar. Inside the walls, the houses are built straight onto the rock, and for a long time they served as the rampart themselves.
The shortage of land produced an extreme kind of building: nearly every house inside the walls has at least four storeys, more than three quarters have five or more, and only one house in two hundred and twenty-eight has no party wall. The enceinte and citadel are listed, as is the former cathedral: the whole town sits within monument surrounds, subject to approval by the state architect.
